Abstract
Objectives:The purpose of this study was to investigate quality of life (QOL) in treatment-resistant schizophrenic patients.
Methods:The 30 treatment-resistant hallucinating patients were compared with 31 non-hallucinating patients and 30 normal control subjects. The treatment-resistant hallucinating patients comprised the schizophrenic patients who report not-remitting hallucinations during 2 years in spite of appropriate treatments. The non-hallucinating patients comprised schizophrenic patients who have chronic illness course, not reporting hallucination within 2 years. QOL was assessed using General Health Questionnaire/quality of Life-12 (GHQ/QL-12) for three groups. Neurocognitive functions were measured by Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST), Continuous performance test (CPT) and Sentence repetition test (SRT). Psychopathology, depressive symptoms and extrapyramidal symptoms were assessed using Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), Beck depression Inventory (BDI) and Extrapyramidal Symptom Rating Scale (ESRS), separately.
Results:QOL was not associated with auditory hallucination. Duration of illness, negative symptoms, scores of sentence repetition test (SRT) and scores of extrapyramidal symptoms rating scale (ESRS) were found to be predictive variables of QOL of treatment resistant auditory hallucinating schizophrenic patients.
Conclusions: QOL was not associated with auditory hallucination, but associated with duration of illness, working memory function, extrapyramidal symptoms and negative symptoms. (Schizophrenia Clinics 2003;6:110-117)
